Joe Kabriel lives in an historic area of Baltimore, Maryland known as Dickyville.  The community dates back to the early 1700's, when the two local mills produced textiles for the country.  It's a community of nature trails, wild life, mill streams, and it shares a border with one of the largest natural wild life preserves located inside a city limit.

He is currently teaching at Anne Arundel Community College in Annapolis Maryland; University of Maryland, University College; and the Northern Virginia Art League in Alexandria, Virginia.

Teaching since 1990, he has developed a loyal following due to his ability to teach technique and fundamentals while encouraging individual style and expression.

Artist's Statement:  The Rock Paintings

The attraction and use of rocks in our culture has been evident throughout time.  Their appeal can be in their color, weight, shape, texture, and as a tool or building material.  Any trip to the beach can find beachcombers of all ages looking for rocks to add to their "collection".

My current work explores the interface of drawing and painting, bringing together different media traditionally seen as separate entities.

I explore the subject of worn and weathered river rocks.  Some cultures believe that rocks contain spiritual energy, which when released provides enlightenment. People hold energy as well and like rocks, are shaped by life events. I use this juxtaposition of rocks and energy in my work as a metaphor for exploring the relationship between life’s forces, inspiration, and enlightenment.

In most cases these “Rock Paintings” use a plunging perspective employing charcoal, color pencil, oil paint, and encaustic wax. Three to five multiple canvases produce a single geometric construct.  Each individual canvas is assigned a particular medium, such as color pencil or oil paint.  As a whole the image becomes a conversation between organic shapes and multiple mediums.

The challenge is to create a visual gestalt.
